A soprano, Thomas's European opera debut took place in Berne, Switzerland, as Alice Ford in Falstaff with Nello Santi conducting. She was heard there and subsequently at the Baden State Theater in Karlsruhe, Barcelona's Teatro Liceo and Geneva's Grand Theatre in a wide variety of roles including Ilia, Agathe, Mimi, Arabella, Tatiana, Rusalka, Lisa in Pique Dame as staged by Lotfi Mansouri, Georgette in II Tabarro with Lamberto Gardelli and Lea in the world premiere of K.H. Fussl's Dybuk.

Recent engagements have included Aida for Montreal and Madison operas, Tosca for Nevada Opera, Norma for Connecticut Opera, and two concert tours throughout Southeast Asia. Other key roles in Thomas's career include Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with New York City Opera, Chrysothemis in Elektra with the Canadian Opera Company and Gioconda, Amelia and Manon Lescaut for Greater Miami Opera. Thomas has been a guest artist with the Aspen Music Festival since 1977 and a member of the Aspen faculty since 1985. Appearances with the Aspen Music Festival have included Bess in Peter Schat's Houdini, Dallapiccola's II Prigioniero, and Schoenberg's Gurre-Lieder, all with Richard Dufallo; Strauss's Salome and Four Last Songs with Jorge Mester; Beethoven's Egmont and Fidelio with Lawrence Foster.
